PLG periodically publishes Progressive Librarian, a peer-reviewed journal that serves as a forum for the development of critical perspectives in librarianship. Progressive Librarian includes articles, book reviews, bibliographies and documents. Full text access to selected articles is available through the Journal's Web site.

PLG has sponsored several programs at the annual conference of the American Library Association and at the annual Socialist Scholars Conference in New York. Topics have included the New World Information and Communications Order, the Smithsonian's "Enola Gay" controversy, academic freedom in the library workplace, and information technology.

PLG grants the Miriam Braverman Memorial Award, which encourages papers concerned with an aspect of the social responsibilities of librarians, libraries, or librarianship. In November, 2006, Progressive Librarians Guild supported the bookmobile project of Libros para Cuba (Books for Cuba).

PLG local chapters host gatherings, programs, and events. PLG members are also active in their communities.

Mark Rosenzweig, co-founder of PLG, appears in the newly-released book Viva Posada!. It contains an introduction by Carlos Cortez and a chronology of Jose Guadalupe Posada. This volume gathers together testimonies of the living and the dead writers and artists. It can be ordered from the Charles H. Kerr Publishing Company.

Lincoln Cushing, UC Berkeley Bancroft Library, is the campus bargaining representative in the 2005 statewide contract negotiations for university librarians (AFT) and was lead person on the Librarian Compensation Task Force from the previous contract.

Kathleen de la Pena McCook, author of Introduction to Public Librarianship (Neal-Schuman 2004), is member of the collective bargaining team, United Faculty of Florida, USF Local.
